Diamond Head is a volcanic crater on the Hawaiian island of O?ahu and known to Hawaiians as Le?ahi. The Hawaiian name is most likely derived from lae (browridge, promontory) plus ?ahi (tuna) because the shape of the ridgeline resembles the shape of a tuna’s dorsal fin. British sailors navigating to the place, mistook calcite crystals for diamonds and, hence, it received its English name. It’s registered as a U.S. National Natural Monument.
It spreads over 475 acres (190 ha) (including the crater’s interior and outer slopes). Due to its high altitude, it was used as surveillance place by military in the early 1900s. It provides panoramic views of Waikiki and the south shore of Oahu. The place features a lighthouse with the same name to help sailors navigate easily.
For every nature lover, naturalist and adventure seeking tourist, Hanauma Bay is a must-see place located along the southeast coast of the Island of O?ahu in the Hawaii Kai neighborhood of East Honolulu. What is Hanauma Bay? It’s a marine embayment formed within a tuff ring. A tuff ring is a volcanic eruption that gets triggered when hot magma comes in contact with the oceanic water.
This popular tourist destination is visited by over three million visitors per year. Hanauma has been a victim of over tourism. In 1956, dynamite was used to clear portions of the reef to make room for telephone cables linking Hawaii to the west coast of the US.
