Covid-19: Travel Advisory for US Travelers

Yes.

2. Is public transportation operating in Portugal?

Yes. The public transportation system of Porto includes interconnecting system of buses, subways, and commuter rails. The public transportation is equal to or better than that found in major U.S. cities.

3. Are US citizens permitted to travel to Portugal?

Yes. However, the Government of Portugal currently prohibits non-essential (tourist) travel to Portugal by U.S. citizens. As of July 1, only essential travel is permitted by U.S. citizens for professional, study, compelling family emergencies, health, or humanitarian reasons

4. Is a negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or serology) required for entry?

Yes. Passengers arriving to Portugal without a negative COVID 19 test results are subject to refusal of entry and/or mandatory testing at the cost of the passenger as well as quarantine until the results of the test.

5. Are U.S. travelers required to quarantine in Portugal?

Yes. Travelers who do not possess a valid certificate to proof negative COVID 19 test results or travelers with symptoms are required to take a Covid-19 test and quarantine themselves unless the test result is out. If found negative, they will be sent to hospital, and the hospitalization cost has to be borne by their insurer or themselves.

6. What if I develop COVID-19 symptoms on arrival in Portugal?

Travelers with COVID-19 symptoms have to undergo PCR tests at designated laboratories in Portugal. The COVID-19 test cost (70 and 80 euros) has to be borne by travelers, unless he/she is covered by French Health insurance (“Sécurité Sociale”). Travellers are asked to show civic responsibility and to follow the health precautions recommended by the authorities.

7. How safe is to visit Porto as far as Covid-19 is concerned?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3- Warning that clearly states citizens to Avoid Nonessential Travel to Portugal.
However, the situation has improved much in the country. Bi-weekly confirmed cases as of September 4 is 1,078.03. The national transmission rate stands between 3 and 5 percent. Daily tests per million in Portugal was recorded as 1824 on August 28, which is higher than the daily test conducted/per million by Canada and lower than the USA.

8. Is travel to Portugal restricted?

The latest travel advisory by The Department of State issued on August 06, 2020, Travel Advisory Level 3 (Reconsider Travel). It advises travelers to reconsider travel to Portugal due to COVID-19.
